The Privilege and Responsibility of Sisterhood
Expectations of Membership
Expectations of Alumna Membership

Delta Phi Epsilon was formed "for the purpose of promoting good fellowship among sorority women, to help, in acquiring knowledge, appreciation, discriminating judgment, and a true feeling of sisterly love, through the interaction of sympathetic and friendly natures." From the notes of our Founders, 1917

Delta Phi Epsilon develops a social consciousness and a commitment to think and act for the greater good. We assure continuous development and achievement for women by embracing our founding principles of Justice, Sisterhood, and Love.
The Mission Statement of Delta Phi Epsilon

Delta Phi Epsilon Crest

As a nonsectarian sorority, DPhiE has a strong legacy as an organization that embraces culturally diverse women, each with special talents, opinions, and life perspectives, who are united by a belief in the concepts of Justice, Sisterhood, and Love to guide our actions in our daily lives with the goal of improving our society. Our Founders had a vision of a group of women working together in our respective communities to foster a social conscience and a willingness to "think in terms of the common good." It is through living by the principles of Justice, Sisterhood, and Love that we encourage better human relations and foster an understanding of diversity throughout the world. "Sorority Life, the life of a Delta Phi Epsilon woman, has served and will continue to serve as a training ground for the practical application of this ideal of democratic living."
(From the Manual of Delta Phi Epsilon, 1951)

The Privilege and Responsibility of Sisterhood

Your membership in Delta Phi Epsilon has come about through a process of mutual selection. It is with great pride that a young woman takes her vow and is initiated into the lifetime of sisterhood of Delta Phi Epsilon. Membership in our sisterhood is a privilege that comes with longstanding traditions, timeless values, and individual responsibilities, and commitment to the organization.

Expectations of Membership

I believe Delta Phi Epsilon is sisterhood for a lifetime and that my obligations will evolve as does my status with the organization, therefore, it is my responsibility to incorporate these expectations into my life as they fit as a New Member, as an Active Collegian, and as an Alumna Member.

I believe in the founding values of the Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority, therefore, it is my responsibility to accept the moral obligation to live within the precepts of Justice, Sisterhood, and Love, and to be authentic by living our motto: Esse Quam Videri (To Be Rather Than To Seem To Be).

I believe that Ritual is the cornerstone of our heritage, therefore, it is my responsibility to embrace the significance and honor the solemnity of our Ritual and incorporate its spirit in my daily life.

I believe that my personal actions reflect on the reputation and campus image of my sisters, my chapter, the International Sorority and the Greek community, therefore, it is my responsibility to strive to have a positive influence on members of my chapter and those persons with whom I interact.

I believe that academic achievement and accomplishments should be the primary concern of all students, therefore, I will pursue educational excellence.

I believe that learning is a lifelong endeavor, therefore, it is my responsibility to commit to my personal and leadership development through living the 5 Ss: Self, S isterhood, Scholarship, Service, and Social.

I believe that one should aspire to live up to the highest standards and ideals of sorority membership, therefore, it is my responsibility to abide by the constitution, by-laws, and policies of the Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority.

I believe in upholding the integrity of the Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority and my local chapter, therefore, it is my responsibility to respect the sanctity of chapter privacy and not divulge information regarding Ritual and Sorority business.

I believe as a non-profit corporation that Delta Phi Epsilon relies on the established dues and fees paid by its members to support the general operations of the Sorority, therefore, it is my responsibility to meet all financial obligations of my local chapter and the International Organization in a timely and consistent manner.

I believe that if chapter housing is available, maintaining that property is important to the success of my chapter, therefore, it is my responsibility to live in chapter housing for the duration of my collegiate membership or until which time the property is filled to capacity.

I believe that all people have individual talents and worth that make them unique and valuable to humanity, therefore, it is my responsibility to demonstrate self-respect and respect of others by considering diverse perspectives and neither abusing nor tolerating the abuse of others mentally, physically, or verbally.

I believe that the continued strength and evolution of Delta Phi Epsilon depends upon the recruitment of new members to enhance our sisterhood, therefore, it is my responsibility to promote membership in Delta Phi Epsilon.

I believe my sisterhood badge represents my eternal devotion to Delta Phi Epsilon, therefore, it is my responsibility to wear the badge with the utmost respect and pride.

I believe membership in Delta Phi Epsilon is a privilege, therefore, it is my responsibility to challenge myself and my sisters to uphold these Sorority expectations and will confront those who violate them.

I believe my collegiate experience has laid the foundation for my personal development through my participation in the 5 Ss, therefore, it is my responsibility to build on that foundation by maintaining a commitment to my personal enrichment.

I believe publications such as the TRIAD help me and my sisters maintain a connection with the International Organizations purpose, initiatives and news about my fellow alumnae, therefore, it is my responsibility to keep current with our international publications and, further, to update the International Headquarters of changes in my name and address, as well as announcements of my achievements.

I believe Delta Phi Epsilon has challenged me to live up to the highest standards and ideals, therefore, it is my responsibility to be a role model in all aspects of my life by continuing to exemplify the principles, values and beliefs of the Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority.
